Every once in a while you find a book that is impossibly hard to put down once you've started reading. This was the case when I was sent a copy of 'Minutes Before Sunset' (Book One of the Timely Death Trilogy) by Shannon A. Thompson for reviewing. Let's just say it's one of those novels that leaves you screaming "feed me more."
I've been fortunate to have been in communication with Shannon via Twitter. She is such a sweetheart and incredibly down to earth not to mention uber talented; which is why I chose to feature her on this blog. I promise you will fall in love with her as I did and if you don't,
go slap yourself you're missing out.
Eesh: Tell us about yourself.
S.T: I'm 22 & I've been blessed to be able to write & publish since I was sixteen. I'm very passionate about writing, reading & drinking too much coffee! Since my debut novel in 2007, I've had poetry published & I've signed with AEC Stellar Publishing. My latest novel, Minutes Before Sunset, is award-winning thanks to my wonderful & supportive readers. I've also recently become a Social Media Marketing Manager. I'm currently finishing my Bachelor's Degree at The University of Kansas, & I'm working hard to continue this writing journey.
Eesh: Congratulations on becoming a Social Media Marketing Manager! Tell us, who or what inspired you to start writing?
S.T: My mother encouraged me to write when I started suffering from nightmares & night terrors. She taught me to turn them into stories in order to make sense of them & not be as afraid. Since then I've fallen in love with writing but I didn't take it seriously (with the intent to publish) until she passed away in 2003. I was eleven years old but I knew at that very moment that I wanted to spend my life achieving my dreams. My first book was published four years later.
Eesh: Oh wow! I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I'm sure she is quite proud of you! What gives you the most pleasure as an author?
S.T: Losing myself while I write is possibly my favorite feeling in the world; but talking to fellow readers and writers is right up next to it!
Eesh: How would you describe your readers?
S.T: I don't think I can generalize every reader with just one word, simply because there are so many delightful readers that I've spoken to who have all had amazing stories and passions they're currently chasing. However, if I had to pick one word, I'd describe them as inspirational.
Eesh: Do you write just one genre or do you dabble into others?
S.T: I mainly write Young-Adult Fiction, generally Sci-Fi or Fantasy but as I mentioned before, I've also had a wonderful opportunity to have my poetry published. I've also studied Non-Fiction (the personal essay) and I've written an Adult Fiction Novel. I love exploring other genres because there is always something new to learn when writers venture out of their comfort zone.
Eesh: Which has been your favorite genre so far?
S.T: I love reading memoirs but I love writing young adult fiction so my favorite genre differs depending on what we're talking about. I love reading memoirs because I am intrigued by the human psyche and the lives of others. I love writing young adult fiction because I want to create stories that teens can relate to & possibly learn from them.
Eesh: Tell us about Minutes Before Sunset.
S.T: Two destinies. One death. 'Minutes Before Sunset' happens through the minds of two young adults as they struggle to survive their paranormal realities and find balance in their human lives.
Eesh: How did you come up with the storyline? What inspired the idea?
S.T: Almost all of my novels are inspired by my dreams and Minutes Before Sunset falls in that category. I was in a very dark time in my life and I began having dreams of a boy visiting me at night, simply to ask how I felt and what I was going to do. When I got out of the dark time, the dreams stopped & I knew I had to write a story about them in his memory.
Eesh: Hmm sounds freaky but so cool! For you, what is the highlight of the book?
S.T: The highlight of the first book for me, is Eric's struggle with identity. He's a very different person from the beginning to the end of the book & his growth was beyond what I, as the author expected from him. I was very proud of him.
Eesh: Where can we purchase Minutes Before Sunset?
Eesh: What other books have you written & where can they be purchased?
S.T: I've written eight other novels but only one other is currently published. 'November Snow' is only available as a Paperback through Amazon. However, Seconds Before Sunrise (Book Two of a Timely Death Trilogy) is expected to be published in Fall of 2013.
Eesh: What is the most valuable lesson that you have learned from being in this "business"?
S.T: What a fantastic question! It's hard to pick which is the most valuable lesson since there has been so many, but I'd say learning not to give up is the main one. For instance, I took my debut novel, 'November Snow', off of the market in 2009 while I went to college. I realized how big of a mistake that was three years later and I got back into it with more passion that ever before! 'Minutes Before Sunset' was published within a year and I know I am not capable of giving up any longer. I will continue, and my ultimate dream now is to help other writers achieve their dreams.
Eesh: Well put! Do you have any advice for up & coming authors?
S.T: My mantra is "Write with passion, succeed with self-discipline". That being said, this profession takes a lot of hard work & dedication but you can let your passion guide you. It's possible to live your life doing what you love, but it takes sacrifice. I always tell those that the sacrifice is well worth it!
Heels or flats?
Definitely flats. I am too clumsy for heels.
Tropical Island or Snow?
Snow. I love moonlight on freshly fallen snow. The entire world looks frozen in time.
Book or Movie?
Books! Reading and writing is my favorite past time. But if it's movies, it's generally something with Humphrey Bogart in it. I adore him!
I'd like to thank Shannon for allowing me the opportunity to interview her so that I and my readers can get to know her better. If you haven't fallen in love with her,
go slap yourself you're missing out.
